An Open Letter To Huckabee Supporters
1.31.8

I am by no means a political analyst. In fact, I'm fairly new to the political process, having only recently discovered that I actually agree with the core Republican tenets that have remained virtually unmentioned for so long. (Well, that's not entirely true. Republicans still talk about things like lower taxes and smaller government. The ones in power just don't follow through in action.)

That being said, it was Ron Paul's constitutional record and message that finally inspired and activated me. However, I have recently come to a revelation: While Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee have thus far been considered rivals...it now seems that we find ourselves in the same boat. That is why I chose to write an open letter to Huckabee supporters.

Last night's "debate" on CNN must have been an eye opener for the Huckabee camp. This is the first time that the media has included a candidate besides Ron Paul in their recent blackout, but rest assured...it's not over. Everything we read these days is designed to create the illusion that Mitt Romney and John McCain are the only existing candidates. While they used to include Huckabee in this little boys club, those times appear to be over. To his supporters, I can only say, "Welcome to our world. It's a lonely, frustrating place...and it's only going to get worse."

What must be considered now, however, is the future. What is now likely to happen?

As long as both Paul and Huckabee stay in the race, each soaking up 8 to 15 percent of the vote in each state, we might be doomed. The media will use those "low" showings as an excuse to continue their shenanigans; the blackout will continue.

If it were possible for one camp to compromise, though, we could form a rather strong union. We could all rally behind and endorse a single candidate, thereby bringing him back from the political dead. The only question is, "Who to rally behind?"

Obviously, being a Paul supporter, I have my own opinions as to who it should be, but hear me out.

First off, Paul has such principled beliefs, and has been running on the same platforms for so long, that it would be a bit hard to believe that he had suddenly changed his mind about the issues and endorsed another candidate. Also, while Huckabee's movement is fueled by grassroots support, Ron Paul's movement has an arguably more passionate following. It would be very difficult to attempt to sway his supporters into backing another candidate now.

Secondly, Ron Paul is prepared and willing to fight against media bias. While Mike Huckabee did recently claim that he would "[play] all nine innings," one must remember that he still thought he was a media darling at the time. This is no longer true. Now that he's had a taste of what Ron Paul has been facing, many have doubts that he can stay in until the last pitch is thrown.

The question remains, though...why now? Why reach out to the Huckabee campaign now?

As I said, we're at a crossroads. While I initially had some problems with Huckabee's insistence on seemingly using his religion to his advantage, in each debate he sounds more and more like Ron Paul.

The two issues that seem to separate them the most these days, are the war and taxes (fair vs. none). Huckabee's views here seem to stem mostly from his lack of knowledge about foreign policy and economics, though. I wonder if a good session of actually listening to Paul might open his eyes?

Getting to the point, what I propose is this: If Huckabee and his supporters truly want to do something good for the country their best bet might be to drop out of the race and fully endorse Ron Paul. This is not a sarcastic comment aimed at a competing candidate. It is what I believe to be a reasonable way to avoid what might otherwise be inevitable. This very well could be the only way for either of our candidates to end up in the White House, and if Huckabee can come around to Paul's message, I don't see why a Paul/Huckabee ticket would even be out of the question...

So...if you feel that this may be our last hope, like I do, please forward this message around. If not, at least think about it for awhile and see if it starts making sense.

Otherwise, if we do nothing, the Republican nominee this year may actually end up being one of these neoconservatives that is being forced down our throats...and our president next year will be a Democrat.

Amazing entry, and I actually posted this up on MySpace. Hopefully some more people will pass it on.

Oh, and this is the ad that came up on the bottom of this page. Irony?
