Chelsea

She has a new boyfriend.
This came as a bit of a shock to me. When I called Chelsea on the 14th to invite her to AVDvi, she made it a point to tell me that she was recently single. She also made it a point to ask me if I was still single.
Now, perhaps (like all men) I'm just really bad at reading a woman's signals. But these to me seemed to be positive statements/questions. Something about them seemed to indicate that I may have had another chance with her. On the 27th, when I finally saw her for a short amount of time, I was told about this new boyfriend of hers. However, it doesn't seem to be all bad news.
Apparently, mere days after AVD, Chelsea was approached by a guy who has supposedly been trying to get her for years. Being the nice girl she is, she gave him a chance. Here's where the story turns in (what could be) my favor.
Chelsea does not want to be with this guy. She tells stories about how fucking crazy he is, and she doesn't seem too happy with the situation. As of right now, though...she's somewhat stuck with him. See, last Friday, this guy's best friend killed himself. Shot himself in the head. (There are conspiracy theories arising amongst his friends that claim that his fiancée was actually to blame...but we'll stick with the suicide story.)
She doesn't want to dump him immediately, and I find that to be a bit noble. Like I said...she's a nice girl.
But it gets me thinking: What is the appropriate amount of time to allow an unrelated tragedy to keep a person in a dead-end relationship? How long is she really obligated to stick around? How much comfort is she expected to give?
It's not as though she had been dating the guy for years, or even months. It must have been around a week, give or take.
It also begs the question, "Am I allowed to hope she breaks up with him?" Does it make me a bad person to act as if my dating situation is more important than this guy potentially losing it completely?
In any case, there have been several more instances since the 27th of Chelsea failing to call me when she said she would. At this point I'm assuming that it all has something to do with the issue at hand, but perhaps she was not even interested in the first place.
Eh...whatever.
